The importance of pre-production

The importance of pre- production of a music video is very important because it is the planning for the video it is vital how you plan your pre production because it forms the basic for your music video and it works out how the production is going to work within the music video.

  • Research into film/music video directors-   research in a music video at pre-production  level is important  because you need to know what the video will be about and how to make the videos.by researching you will have a idea of what the music video will look like at the end of the production also you will know what shots and techniques you need to use and when it comes to editing you need to know how to make it accurate by making the lips sync accurate to the audio.
  • Treatment-  A treatment is a  brief paragraph  and over view about what the video  is about and should be about, for example  if your video was going to be narrative about a love story,  the treatment should state this within it and  you should make it clean what the video is about and that it is a love story.
  • Moodboard -  A mood board is  a range of pictures together to at represents what the film is going to be about. If you are pitching the film idea, the sets of pictures that you have used in a mood board will portray that what kind of story that your video is going to be like. for example, if the video was a narrative and was a sad story the mood through out the video should be a sad vibe with dark colours, a mood board sets the mood for all videos.
  • Risk assessment for each location-  A risk assessment is important because for any set or location involved in the making of the video would have any risks, if the production team gets injured or harmed. for example if you are filming at near a lake or water there could be risks of the electronics falling into the water.
  • Ask artist for permission via Email, Twitter, Myspace Etc (Music Videos only)-  if when making your music video you use someone's else's song or  image of music for your film you have to ask permission off the artist because it is not something you own you have to contact them some how saying you are using it.
  • Timeline analysis of chosen song  (Music Videos only)- A timeline analysis is where you are estimating the time for each scene you take this will help you  structure the video and give you a over view of how long the music video will be.
  • Storyboard- A storyboard is when you've planned you music video out and spreading the films scene in to sections and annotating it and drawing it showing a breif plan of the shots that are going to be used, what is happening in the scene and how long it is going to be.
  • Crew list- a crew list is important because as it names the cast being used in the productions this help by naming the roles of what each person has to do when producing the film.  Also having a crew list shows that who is participating in the video.
  • Shot list- Is important because the shot list shows that what shots are going to be used throughout the video such as panning and Etc...
  • Locations list- Is important because the location list is where film will be located and where the filming will take place.this is important because you should keep a record of where you are going to film because the location may not be able to be used at that time or the weather may be what you expect. Also the location of the film may depend on what you film is about.
  • Budget- Is important because every film production team needs to have a budget  for any cost within the making of the music video. for example the equipment  need such as camera lighting and other useful equipment will have to be paid for out of the budget. Also the budget will give a over view of how much it will cost the film will need for props and other equipmen
  • Film test footage/pictures of location reccy- Is important because when the user test the video. however when you test it you should take a few clips just in case and the person should pick the best one. also when you a testing the footage it should be perfect and fit in to the scenes that you planned or made.
  • Planning rest of Mise En Scene (clothing, props, make-up, effects etc)- Is important because the mise scens is what you are going to use within the video such as effects, make-up, props and clothing. you should plan all these within the pre production before you make the music video also try and make the video as accurate as possible. you should plan all of these so you can make sure they are available when you are producing the video
  • Pitch to gain feedback (presentation to the class about the ideas)- Is important because every single film producer should make a presentation to pitch and it should contain information about what your video is going to be about and shows all the pre production work that you have done.
