The importance of pre-production

The importance of pre- production of a music video is very important because it is the planning for the video it is vital how you plan your pre production because it forms the basic for your music video and it works out how the production is going to work within the music video.

  • Research into film/music video directors-   research in a music video at pre-production  level is important  because you need to know what the video will be about and how to make the videos.by researching you will have a idea of what the music video will look like at the end of the production also you will know what shots and techniques you need to use and when it comes to editing you need to know how to make it accurate by making the lips sync accurate to the audio.
  • Treatment-  A treatment is a  brief paragraph  and over view about what the video  is about and should be about, for example  if your video was going to be narrative about a love story,  the treatment should state this within it and  you should make it clean what the video is about and that it is a love story.
  • Moodboard -  A mood board is  a range of pictures together to at represents what the film is going to be about. If you are pitching the film idea, the sets of pictures that you have used in a mood board will portray that what kind of story that your video is going to be like. for example, if the video was a narrative and was a sad story the mood through out the video should be a sad vibe with dark colours, a mood board sets the mood for all videos.
  • Risk assessment for each location-  A risk assessment is important because for any set or location involved in the making of the video would have any risks, if the production team gets injured or harmed. for example if you are filming at near a lake or water there could be risks of the electronics falling into the water.
  • Ask artist for permission via Email, Twitter, Myspace Etc (Music Videos only)-  if when making your music video you use someone's else's song or  image of music for your film you have to ask permission off the artist because it is not something you own you have to contact them some how saying you are using it.
  • Timeline analysis of chosen song  (Music Videos only)- A timeline analysis is where you are estimating the time for each scene you take this will help you  structure the video and give you a over view of how long the music video will be.
  • Storyboard- A storyboard is when you've planned you music video out and spreading the films scene in to sections and annotating it and drawing it showing a breif plan of the shots that are going to be used, what is happening in the scene and how long it is going to be.
  • Crew list- a crew list is important because as it names the cast being used in the productions this help by naming the roles of what each person has to do when producing the film.  Also having a crew list shows that who is participating in the video.
  • Shot list- Is important because the shot list shows that what shots are going to be used throughout the video such as panning and Etc...
  • Locations list- Is important because the location list is where film will be located and where the filming will take place.this is important because you should keep a record of where you are going to film because the location may not be able to be used at that time or the weather may be what you expect. Also the location of the film may depend on what you film is about.
  • Budget- Is important because every film production team needs to have a budget  for any cost within the making of the music video. for example the equipment  need such as camera lighting and other useful equipment will have to be paid for out of the budget. Also the budget will give a over view of how much it will cost the film will need for props and other equipmen
  • Film test footage/pictures of location reccy- Is important because when the user test the video. however when you test it you should take a few clips just in case and the person should pick the best one. also when you a testing the footage it should be perfect and fit in to the scenes that you planned or made.
  • Planning rest of Mise En Scene (clothing, props, make-up, effects etc)- Is important because the mise scens is what you are going to use within the video such as effects, make-up, props and clothing. you should plan all these within the pre production before you make the music video also try and make the video as accurate as possible. you should plan all of these so you can make sure they are available when you are producing the video
  • Pitch to gain feedback (presentation to the class about the ideas)- Is important because every single film producer should make a presentation to pitch and it should contain information about what your video is going to be about and shows all the pre production work that you have done.

Research Techniques for Media

Types of resarch:
  • Primary research — this is when the researcher has researcher has conducted it themselves. Primary data is used in media because people conduct their own music videos, documentaries, blogs etc.
  • Secondary research - summary, collation or a synthesis of someones existing work research
  • Qualitative research - the research that goes in to detail, the research is often used as a method of exploratory research as a basis for later qualitative research hypotheses.
  • Quantitative  research - research that depends on the amount of research in the detail on the document.
Methods of resarch incldue:
Manual reasearch/Primary resarch:
Primary research is viewed as more time consuming and exhausting to do. The other method of research is internet based, when the finder surfs the internet to look for existing documents, this is known as secondary research.

Evaluation of finished music video

The group i was involved in worked well together and we made a good team and all agreed on the right song to pick and we didn't really have any problems with coming up with ideas. myself and Daniel were comfortable with being the actors within the video and Jasreet doing all the camera work,  there were no problems on which roles we had. everyone was comfortable with the given role.

2. The problems we faced through out the production of our music video were our group not having enough time to finish our video and not always having the right equipment and the equipment not always working or the battery time had finished while recording. the way we overcame this was by asking  if we could extend our time or film in our own time and making sure our equipment worked and everything was fully charged before going off site.

3. If we added some improvements such as better camera quality and better camera shots it would make the music video look more professional compared to actual music videos.

4. the audience found our music video pretty impressive however they made some points where we can improve on such as using a better camera and better places to take shots i have learnt from this because next time i can act on it.

5. in this music video we used software such as adobe photoshop, this helped us to edit and create scenes and images and also create our storyboard. we also used adobe premier to edit the clips and put them together. this helped us to shorten and lengthen the clips so that the music video would be in sync. this software also helped us to edit our scenes e.g. at the end of the video we zoomed into the ground to create a falling effect.

Analyse Music Video

In this section i will be analysing a music video and will talking about what are the good points, bad points and what could be improved.

The music video that i will analysing is Chase and status - Time

Purpose of the music video - To promote the songs awareness against domestic violence and also shows a performance from singer.

The music video is presented like a story of a girl that lives with her mum and dad but is unhappy because her dad is an alcoholic and drinks at night away from the children and then turns very violent and attacks and beats up the mother where the daughter can hear and is worried for her mothers wellbeing. It is also shows awareness about abuse and domestic violence and takes this taboo issue head on and does it in a way that illuminates the subject as well as providing a hard- hitting narrative. notably focusing on the effects of alcohol abuse on a normal family. Mainly taken from the viewpoint of a grown-up daughter – the affected bystander who represents Delilah’s vocal – it shows all too convincingly show how her mother and father become locked into a cycle of behaviour with devastating consequences. The song it self is told from the grown up daughter.

There also is a bit of an performance which includes singer Delilah as we can see she is sitting in a a car singing and there is a gloomy atmosphere as there is rain hitting against the windows. the singer is seen as a affected bystander.

Mise en Scene -  The the props that the music video uses are a normal middle class family living room and also a scene in a car with rain and a scene in a park which the girl is on a swing. the younger girls bedroom and the parents bedroom, there also is a scene in the bathroom where the mother puts on make up to hide her bruises her partner has given her. there is also a scene on the stairs of the houses where the parents are arguing and the father pushes the mother down the stairs and she lays flat at the bottom of the stairs with no strength to get back up so she stays and lays there.then the daughter uses a phone prop to call the police which come and take the father to jail the last scene is the father in a prison cell and then the mother and daughter go and visit him in jail which there they have a sad reunion. the clothes the parents wore where different they had day and work wear where the mother and father had business suits and blazers as they go to work and when they are at home they wore jeans jumpers dresses and long tops. the daughter wore jeans jumpers and jackets and big coats.

Group 1( Shaukta, kamiul, amzol, muddassir) :

Includes treatment, crew list, location list, shots, mise en scene, risk assessment - well explained and detailed and also explains story line - narrative video: shown through storyboard and what happens within each scene? and crew list? but other than that the storyboard was good and the story line is really interesting

Group 2 ( Warda, Sabeena, Shuma):

initial idea of the music video is random clips and pictures to keep audience entertained. whats the many idea for the video? and the location list and shot list? but they songs a good song and can do something really good with the song and a good mood board and story board

Group 3 ( Anthony, Shuab):
the initial idea of this video is a narrative story about a young couple and the girl falls pregnant and it shows the troubles of teenage pregnancy this is a good idea and can show young couples about the troubles of unprotected  sex and also includes awareness about child abuse
